Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was raised by her Aunt Denise She encouraged DuVernay to develop her creativity and was instilled by art. Her aunt worked the evening shift in the role of a nurse so that she could pursue her love for art literature and theater during the day. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the arts can serve to engage people. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, who had a moral compass and urged DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay was born together with her parents in Compton she spent every summer in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home that her father owned. DuVernay's father recalled watching the iconic civil rights demonstration across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay's time in Alabama's Selma inspired her to produce a film on The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. The school was home to University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American Studies. As a student DuVernay was interested in creating in television journalism. Her first job was as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was recalled having an assignment to watch the home and looking through the waste of one of jurors. She was disappointed by her journalistic duties and decided to move into the field of public relations. DuVernay was brought in right after college, as a junior publicist at an unassuming studio. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also created a variety of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
